Feminism

The Theory

The media is considered by feminists as being constructed for men. It is sometimes viewed as a Patriarchal society in which men command the power and women are subordinate, this is often portrayed for example in a police drama where men are in a position of power over women, such as being higher rank.
Academic feminist theory emerged as a response to the activism that became popular during the 1970's. Laura Mulvey's male gaze is often considered to be the most recognised and accurate theory that is put into practice. In film the male gaze consits of taking a viewpoint from a male's perspective in which a woman may be objectifed, for a example the camera may focus on the curves of a woman's body. Thus showing how women are often objectified and considered passive objects in both film and the broader media outputs.

Feminism is a representitive theory in which women believe that they should be treated equal to men. For example they believe they have the right to equal pay, equal rights etc. Feminists would see the media as disempowering women as they are hardly included as the lead protaginists in film and media productions, protagonist roles are usually assigned to men who carry the macho image that is required to fit into the mainstream.

Semiotic Theory

Ferdinand De Saussre created the Semiotic Theory which explains the process which we interpret signs that is received. And example would a emotion would be creating from seeing a certain colour such as Red. Could range a variety of emotions from Anger to Love.

The process is said to be Sign = Signifier =Siginfied

Sun - Light hearted upbeat music - Happy

In my magazine I shall use a certain array of colours to from the Semitoic theory to invoke a array of emotions. Which I will use certain colours as Black, Red, Purple and green which are associated with the genre I am basing my magazine on. Some of the bands will be using dark colours such as red for blood and black for darkness, others will use bright colours such as purple, orange and blue. These colours could be used in a variety of different uses such as in a picture of the background to even the font. The colours will be strongly reflected on the photography picture. To the logo of the magazine.

Genre

The genre I will be choosing for my magazine would be a mixture of metal and punk rock. Overall it will be based on the rock genre, so I will be looking for a dark tone for the magazine, with a mixture of bright colours occasionally.

I have chosen this for it is a popular genre and the will plenty to research from such as kerrang. It is widly popular and I can explore alot of themes within the genre.

My questionnaire

Here is the questionnaire that I have created. It is short but the answers will cover the variety of questions I need to create a magazine. It also is short enough for that the people I will be surveying will not get bored and will give it full attention.

Please complete the questionnaire so that I can process the results.

Qualitative and Quantitative

There is two different types of research qualitative and quantitative.
Qualitative is a form of asking a large range of people but not to give them the options such as "Answer A B or C" but for them to give a large summary of an answer themself. This is useful as it can give the researcher the optinity to explore a larger answer and opinion of the people and not give them a linear path to choose from. The problem with this is that people are lazy and will or most likely not bother answer the question or if they do not to give full attention.
Quantitative is more or less the opposite of qualitative, it gives the people a shorter and linear answers to choose from. Though this may not give the full answer and opinion a large variety of questions or answer may be able to make up for this flaw. Plus people will give it their full attention as it is only short and would not waste their time as people never seem to give the time to their time to questionairres.

For my questionairre I shall use both these methods of research, a few linear quantitative questions such as 4 options to choose from then followed by a few open minded questions for them to explore and explain. I will ask them about their opinions on music, music magazines and what they would like to see in them. I will of course divide this up into small segemented questions

Introduction to media AS coursework.

Introduction to media AS coursework
I have been asked to produce a front cover of a Music Magazine cover, contests page and a double page spread on the artist of my choice.  It will aid the marketing of a fresh new band from my area. I order for me to create this, I will be using the technology available to me such as camera, Photoshop, internet.

My first task will be to produce a front page of a college magazine and a mock-up of a contents page. In addition I will need to fully research music magazines, identifying the conventions and target audiences. I will analyse Metal/Rock magazines such as Kerrang, Metal Hammer, NME and Q. Using these I will identify the ways that these magazines are presented and published, also I will analyse  their content.

When I explore the content and conventions of these magazines I will take into account on analysing.
Layout (Where the items are placed and the purpose of why it was placed in that certain place)
Font (Style, Size)
Colour (The use of colour and why this colour was used and what it represents)
Pictures(Why they chose a certain picture and how it was created and the use for it)
Overall purpose(Why the magazine was created, who was it aimed for and what makes is unique and why the audience should choose that magazine)

For examining the magazines in this way, I will have a better understanding on creating a magazine and will learn techniques in which making my magazine will benefit from.
